Roseville, MN (February 27, 2014) – While snow and cold continued to dampen spirits in Minnesota throughout February, residential construction permit activity remained relatively strong. While single family permits dipped below February 2013 by 14 percent, permits for multi-family units rose by 30 percent. And, so far this year, permits are up almost two percent with units up by 35 percent over January and February of 2013.
According to data compiled by the Keystone Report for the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC), there were 248 permits issued for a total of 408 units during four comparable weeks in the month of February, 2014. Year-to-date, there were 668 permits issued for a total of 1,529 units.
“We’re looking at February’s numbers as pretty good,” said Shawn Nelson, Builders Association of the Twin Cities 2014 president and president of New Spaces. “We remain ahead of last year, and consumer sentiment continues to be positive for housing.
“Additionally, our Parade of Homes starts on Saturday which should infuse a lot of new sales into the system,” Nelson said.
Minneapolis once again led the top five cities for the month in activity, permitting 66 units. Wayzata joined the top five ranks in the number two spot with 64 units, followed by Chaska at 27 units. Blaine was fourth with 21 units followed by Woodbury with 19 units.
