A Lake Minnetonka Contemporary: A Dream Come True

Having been out of the country for most of the past 10 years, the owners of this property were anxious to get back home. The goal was a home-site on Lake Minnetonka, with ample frontage and long westerly views. Finally, in the late summer of 2011, a teardown in Tonka Bay became available. It was perfect. Landsted got involved a short time later, listening to their client’s vision for the home and exploring options.

While living overseas, the owners developed an appreciation for contemporary design, top-shelf materials, and leading edge technology. They needed a place to escape and re-connect. With ideas flowing and mission defined, the Landsted team began the design process, razed the existing structure, and prepped the site for the new foundation.

Then the fun began. From the outside, the low-maintenance contemporary exterior features stucco, stone, and James Hardie soffits and fascia. Enjoying life on the lake will be effortless with an outdoor shower and nearby locker room, stone screened porch with gas fireplace and extensive lakeside patios and landscaping.

Inside, clean lines and monochromatic colors focus attention on the incredible views. Upon entering the great room, one is greeted by the floating open stair and expansive lake views framed by floor to ceiling Marvin Ultimate Series windows. The indigo-dyed and hand-scraped hickory flooring, natural stone, granite, Italian tile and enameled birch door slabs whisper quality, so as not to detract from the fabulous setting. State-of-the-art HVAC, lighting, audio and technology systems are seamless. And the custom wine cellar and home theater facilitate entertaining and are sure to impress.

In the kitchen, an expansive granite island is flanked by Euro cabinetry with white lacquer finish and high-end appliances. The opulent owners’ retreat is over 1,600 square feet, and features a breakfast bar with appliances, amazing bath, private Trex balcony, sitting room with two-sided fireplace, and exercise room with views. A guest suite, accessed via back stair, welcomes visitors.

Landsted, a small but notable design/build firm from the St. Croix valley, has been serving the greater metro area since 1986. Their process, which involves open dialogue between owners, Landsted designers and construction professionals, results in creative, satisfying and efficient projects.

Edina Beckons: Unique Details Capture the Essence of Luxury

Located in the heart of South Harriett Park and only four blocks from 50th and France Avenue, this luxurious Edina home has it all. Arkansas-quarried stone anchors the charming exterior perfectly. Diamond cut cedar shakes combine with the shake-style roof with its integration of copper accents, steep pitches and gorgeous styling for a dramatic welcome.

Step inside the front door to a grand floating walnut and wrought iron staircase, an inviting first impression. Graceful herringbone walnut floors underfoot bring you to the great room with its coffered ceiling. This space opens into a gourmet kitchen with a spectacular custom-made stainless steel riveted hood, one of only two in the country.

The kitchen presents Wolf and Subzero appliances, granite counter tops, custom-made cabinetry and more. Light streams in through the dining area, showcasing the truly handcrafted woodwork unique to this home. The woodwork picture-frames Marvin windows and reveal a vaulted, bead-board screened porch for summer relaxation. There’s also a convenient, additional entrance to the butler’s pantry where you can heat up hors d’oeuvres in the third Wolf oven or prep a quick snack in the abundant working space.

Guests will also enjoy a truly transitional powder room, with the latest lighting, woodwork, sink fixtures, and wall coverings. You’ll enjoy knowing your kids’ things are stored out of sight in the mudroom that boasts five lockers, a built-in storage cabinet, and an additional closet. You’ll also love the main level’s quiet study with nine-inch planked walnut floors, wainscot and privacy doors.

In the upper level, there’s a unique, vaulted owners’ bedroom connecting to its own private bath. You’ll love the heated Carrara marble floor, which sweeps into the shower room. A freestanding tub flanks the double vanities with fixtures integrated into the wall and perfectly designed makeup center. Three additional bedrooms are located in the upper level with built-in furniture for sleepovers, and a bonus room for playtime and crafts.

Peek into the lower level from upstairs and you see hints of the unique bar made of rare, wormy butternut trees. Also known as white walnut, this wood was harvested from dead and diseased trees in an effort to save healthy ones — and creates a must-see feature. From the bar you can relax in the TV area with its built-in furniture, or get active with a game of darts or pool. There’s also an exercise room through the paneled glass. An additional sleeping area with separate bathroom completes this lower level. In-floor heat along with zoned air control system assures you of every-day comfort in this amazing Dream Home.

As Smart as it is Beautiful: Modern Overachiever that’s Green, Smart, Beautiful and Ageless

This innovative gem of a home is where beauty meets brain, and cutting-edge technology blends seamlessly with timeless architecture and mod design. The 4,400 square-foot luxury dream home is nestled on a quarter-acre lot amidst a scenic pond and mature trees in the Tyrol Hills neighborhood. You’ll waste no time (or energy) in enjoying the property’s green features.

Before you even enter the main home, admire the all-electric car plug with solar panel chargers that adorn the spacious two-and-one-half stall garage. To the back, and tucked behind a natural screen of fir trees, an outdoor patio space becomes fully integrated with the home’s main-level screening room when its roll-up phantom screen and 14-foot wide bi-fold doors are fully open.

The smart phone is the mastermind responsible for home automation, allowing home security and all media systems to be conveniently controlled from the palm of your hand. The home’s LED lights, solar panels, spray foam insulation, and Geothermal heating and cooling system may have earned it a platinum Green Path rating – which would make it the second home to ever have received this honor. Future homeowners can also look forward to an additional $24,000 in federal energy tax credits and almost no utility bills.

DiGiacomo Homes & Renovations Inc. thought of everything by designing a timeless space with ageless function. And an added Universal Design and Aging-In-Place layer allows both home and homeowner to grow even wiser as they age comfortably in place. These smart future features include no step entries, wheelchair-width hallways, framing and wiring for a potential future elevator and a ‘personal aide suite’ on the lower level. The home within a home suite includes a dining room, living room, bedroom, bath, and future kitchenette. This plan fully embraces the ‘Universal Design’ concept as it also can serve as an in-law suite, or as a private haven for a recent grad, family nanny or visiting exchange student.

Beauty shows her face as visitors make their way throughout the home’s stunning interior. From oak flooring to hand-glazed tiles, white enameled cabinetry and Carrara marble counters, the gourmet kitchen looks as fresh as the food it can prepare. Mid-Century finishes and furnishings, including polished chrome hardware, grass cloth wall coverings, a nostalgic color palette and one-of-a-kind furnishings, speak to a style that is impeccable in quality and timeless in aesthetics.
