Winners of the Reggie Awards℠, Trillium Awards℠, Builder of the Year, Associate of the Year and more were Named

At a red carpet gala on Saturday, October 13th, the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) honored its top firms and individuals for excellence in home building. Held at the Marriott Southwest in Minnetonka, the evening showcased the 45th annual Reggie Award℠ winners, and honored their partners (suppliers and sub-contractors) with the 23rd annual Trillium Awards℠, both awards are given for a new home’s quality in design and construction.

The evening saw the presentation of the coveted Builder of the Year and Associate of the Year trophys to firms that exemplify the highest standards in business conduct. BATC also recognized winners of its Robert L. Hanson Service Award for industry service, Spike of the Year for recruitment of new members, and its new Advocate of the Year for work by a member in the advocacy arena. In addition, BATC bestowed the new Legislator of the Year awards on four state legislators for their support of the housing industry, three of whom were in attendance to share in the festivities. (Read more about the Legislators of the  Year on the accompanying press release.)

“The BATC fall awards of excellence gala is the biggest night of the year for the home building community,” said Curt Christensen, 2012 President and owner of Lee Lyn Construction. “Even through the deepest recession any of our members have seen, they continued to strive for excellence in their products and services and in the way they conduct their businesses. That spirit remains alive and well, even as the market improves. And that is truly what Saturday evening was all about.”

For the second year in a row, BATC’s charitable arm, the BATC Foundation, was invited to host an auction during the night’s festivities. This year they brought over 60 donated items to the pre-dinner social, and raised over $30,000. (See auction details in separate press release.)

BUILDER OF THE YEAR AND ASSOCIATE OF THE YEAR

The evening culminated with the presentation of BATC’s most coveted honors, the annual Builder of the Year and Associate of the Year Awards. The winning companies are selected based upon evaluations of trust, communications, loyalty and ethics by the firms which they do business. The companies earning the most points won.

“Being named BATC’s Builder of the Year or Associate of the Year is something for which every member strives,” says Christensen. “The home building industry really does rely on the partnership between builder and their subs, vendors and suppliers more than most others. And so earning the trust and loyalty of one another is critical for success. This award recognizes and honors that relationship.”

REGGIE AND TRILLIUM AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN HOME DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

Since 1968, BATC has presented the Reggie Award to builders for outstanding achievement in the design, quality and value of their homes as judged by their harshest critics, builders and professionals within the industry. All of the homes judged were on display to the public during the 2012 Fall Parade of HomesSM. After viewing all the homes in each of 15 price categories, the four judges assigned to the category met to compare notes and select the winner. A total of 104 homes from 55 building firms were entered in the competition.

The Trillium Awards were designed over two decades ago to recognize the partnership between builder and their suppliers and sub-contractors in creating excellence. BATC member companies that participated with the builder in the design and construction of any Reggie-entered home entered the competition at their discretion. The Trillium Awards were then presented to the participating companies for their work on Reggie winning homes.

For the second year in a row, Homes by Tradition LLC took home two Reggie Awards. And, three associate BATC members each earned three Trillium Awards: Fireside Hearth and Home, Scherer Bros. Lumber, and Southern Lights.

“Earning a Reggie Award is truly an honor,” says Carole Griffith, Vice President of Sales with Homes by Tradition. “And we love telling our customers that other builders chose our home as the best, what better testament can we have.”

ROBERT L. HANSON INDUSTRY SERVICE AWARD

The Robert L. Hanson Service Award was created to recognize the contributions members make to BATC and the homebuilding industry. BATC’s committees, councils and staff nominate members who have gone a step above in supporting the industry during the past year. Nominees provide biographies which are reviewed by BATC’s current president and previous winners of the award who confer to choose the winner.

“I was pleased to help choose the winner of this year’s Robert L. Hanson Service Award,” said Christensen. “There were so many exceptional members nominated, all of whom take time away from their families to support the work we do here at BATC and within the home building and remodeling industry. I thank them all for their dedication and support, it made my job as BATC president a whole lot easier this year.”

SPIKE AND ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR

Two additional awards were presented at the BATC Awards Gala that recognize members for their work at BATC. The Spike of the Year is given to the BATC member who recruits more new companies into the association than any other. And new in 2012, the Advocate of the Year is selected by BATC’s public policy committee to honor a member for their work supporting and advocating for our industry.

“Both of these awards let us show how much we value the work our members do,” explained BATC’s executive director, David Siegel. “Recruiting new members is so important to the viability of an organization like ours, and I’m very proud of our incredibly high retention rate of 87 percent. Our new advocacy award is another way for us to say thank you for helping the home building and remodeling industry as a whole.”
